SeaShell tells

By Danny Villarreal

     Small seashells

     Told me a tale

     Before the brine

     Before the whale

     They said to listen

     Quiet like a stone

     They said to be still

     Make sure I’m alone

     A long time ago

     Before we had said

     A light came to earth

     Bringing life to the dead

     Heat and steam

     Water and dreams

     It rose into the sky

     Bringing a tear

To all gods up on high

     Wonder and brilliance

     It shone through the night

     Opening its eyes

     Feeling the fright

     Later it came to know

     It came to understand

It was part of a being

It was part of a plan

     But soon things changed

     Other beings then came

     To know and to forget

     All that was sane

     So here we are now

     Talking to you

     Telling you about

     What made the sea blue?

     Do humans care?

     Do you understand?

That you are partly a dream

     And partly a man

     Why do you create?

     Only to destroy

Is the earth not your mother?

And you her girls and boys

     Why do you pollute?

     Air, water, and sand

     Why do you change?

The nature of god and man

     Are we not all equal

     Do we not all cry

     Is there not equality?

     Even as we die

     The seashell spoke softly

     Then it finally said

     Do not sacrifice the future

For a past long since dead
